The sitz bath is an immersion bath in which the patient sits in water of appropriate temperature while keeping his feet in a hot tub bath.

Hot Sitz 41-44°C / 106-111°F, Cold Sitz 13-24°C / 55-75°F, Foot Bath 41-43°C / 106-109°F

Physiologic Effects

  1. Alternate hot and cold produces Fluxion

Indications

If very painful, use Revulsive Douche i.e. one change, very hot to very short, very cold.

  1. Pelvic Inflammations
  2. Constipation
  3. Pelvic Neuralgia of the ovaries and uterus
  4. Enteralgia, neuralgia of the intestines
  5. Pelvic Pain
  6. Pelvic Neuritis
  7. Neuralgias in the bladder, rectum or prostate.

Equipment

  1. Bath Thermometer
  2. Wash tub and wood blocks
  3. Foot tub (2 if doing the alternate hot and cold)
  4. Lightweight blanket
  5. Basin of ice water and compress
  6. 3 or 4 bath towels
  7. Tea Kettle of boiling water

Important Considerations

  • May cause fainting - watch carefully

Preparation for Treatment

  • Keep room free from drafts
  • Assemble equipment
  • Place towel under buttocks and knees, also behind back to protect from tub.

Treatment

  • Alternate hot and cold sitz bath: 41-44°C / 106-111°F, hot 2 to 3 minutes, cold - 15-20 seconds, repeat for 3 times. Foot Bath: 43-44°C / 109-111°F
  • Place sufficient water in the tub to cover hips and reach abdomen.
  • Foot Bath should be several degrees hotter than the sitz bath.

Completion of Treatment

  • Make sure the patient is warm and dry.
  • Allow to rest for 20 minutes.

Modified sitz bath

The ordinary bath tub may be used with the patient sitting in the water with the knees bent.

Fluxion of pelvic viscera

Two tubs side by side:

Hot: 41-46°C / 106-112°F, Cold: 13-25°C / 55-75°F, foot bath 44-46°C / 110-112°F

  • Cooling Compress to head and neck
  • hot for 2-3min then cold 15-20sec for 3 changes
